Sand Casting Process:
Sand casting involves creating a mold from sand, pouring molten metal into it, allowing it to solidify, and then removing the sand to reveal the casting. The process typically includes pattern making, core making (if needed), mold preparation, melting, pouring, cooling, shakeout, and finishing.
Here’s a more detailed breakdown of the sand casting process:
1. Pattern Making:
A replica of the desired part, known as a pattern, is created using materials like wood, metal, or plastic.The pattern is designed to be slightly larger than the final casting to account for shrinkage during cooling.
2. Core Making (if needed):
If the casting requires internal cavities, cores are made using sand, which are then placed within the mold.Cores are made by packing specially prepared sand in core boxes.
3. Mold Preparation:
The pattern is placed in a box, and sand is compacted around it to form the mold cavity. The sand is mixed with a bonding agent to hold it together. A parting line is created where the mold will be split.
4. Melting:
The metal to be cast is melted in a furnace.
5. Pouring:
The molten metal is poured into the mold cavity through a gating system.The gating system ensures smooth metal flow into the mold and reduces turbulence.
6. Shell Removal and Finishing:
The molten metal cools and solidifies within the mold cavity.The sand around the casting absorbs heat, facilitating an even cooling process.
7. Shakeout:
The mold is opened, and the solidified casting is removed from the sand.The sand is shaken and shifted to separate the casting.
8. Sand Removal and Recovery:
The sand is removed and collected, cooled, and reclaimed for future use.
9. Finishing:
Any excess material, such as gating or risers, is removed.The surface of the casting is cleaned and prepared for further processing.
10. Inspection:
The casting is inspected to ensure it meets the required specifications.Inspection may include dimensional accuracy, surface quality, and internal defects.
